심리학자 맥퍼슨은 악기를 연습 중인 어린이 157명을 추적해 보았답니다. 연습량도 똑같고, 다른 조건도 다 비슷했는데 아이들이 연습을 시작한 9개월쯤 후부터 아이들의 실력이 크게 벌어졌답니다. 연습을 시작하기 전에 아이들에게 "넌 음악을 얼마나 오래 할 거지?"라고 질문했는데 그때 아이들의 대답은 크게 세 가지였답니다. "저는 1년만 하다가 엄마가 그만하래요." "저는 고등학교 졸업할 때까지만 할 거예요." "저는 앞으로 계속하고 싶어요." 맥퍼슨은 아이들의 실력을 비교해 보고 깜짝 놀랐답니다. 앞으로 계속 연주할 거라는 아이들의 수준이 1년만 하고 그만둘 것이라는 아이들보다 무려 4배나 더 높았답니다. 음악에 임하는 태도의 차이입니다.
<애티튜드(도리스 메르틴 저)>라는 책의 저자는 “무엇이 삶의 격차를 만드는가? 당신이 선택한 ‘태도’가 모든 것을 바꾼다!”라고 말합니다. 현대인들은 과잉 사회, 무한 경쟁, 과열된 성과주의 속에서 정보는 쏟아지고 소비는 늘어났으며, 복잡한 인간관계와 새로운 경험들을 따라가며 분주한 세월을 보내며 세상과 자신의 요구 사항을 충족하기 위해 끝없이 노력하지만 좀처럼 삶에 만족할 수 없다는 것입니다. 그 결과 능률과 삶의 질은 낮아지고 건강은 나빠졌으며 친절과 행복은 사라져버렸다는 것입니다. 저자는 이런 상황에서 자신만의 유연함으로 살아가는 태도가 인생의 격차를 만든다고 말합니다. 저자는 유연함은 자신이 처한 상황에서 삶을 객관적이고 구체적으로 분석하고, 스스로 삶의 방향을 조절할 줄 아는 힘이라고 말합니다. 그러면서 유연함의 태도를 “내적 동인 파악하기, 삶을 분석하기, 단순하게 살기, 효율적으로 집안일 하기, 일과 삶 사이에서 유영하기, 나만의 시간 가지기, 쓸데없는 일 줄이기, 깊이 사랑하기, 내 곁에 좋은 사람들 두기, 좋은 컨디션 유지하기, 반응 연습하기” 등 11가지를 소개하고 있습니다. 누구나 한 번밖에 주어진 인생을 행복하고 성공적으로 살기를 원합니다.
<성취심리>라는 책을 쓴 브레이언 트레이시는 성공공식을 (IA+AA)xA=IHP라고 말합니다. IA은 선천적 특성(inborn attributes), AA는(acquired attributes) 성장하면 과정에서 습득하고 계발한 지식, 기술, 재능, 경험, 능력입니다. A는 태도(attitude)입니다. IHP(indivisual human performance)는 개인적인 성과입니다. 결국, 타고난 선천적 특성에 후천적으로 습득한 특성을 더한 다음에 태도를 곱하면 개인적인 성과가 나온다는 것입니다. 여기서 태도의 질은 거의 무제한 향상될 수 있기 때문에 보통 수준의 선천적 특성과 후천적 특성을 가진 사람이라도 긍정적인 태도를 갖기만 하면 높은 성과를 달성할 수 있다고 말합니다. 중요한 것은 태도에는 마이너스가 있어 아무리 선천적 능력이 있어도 태도가 나쁘면 성공하기가 쉽지 않다는 것입니다. 태도가 마이너스이면 아무리 큰 수도 그것을 곱하여 버리면 마이너스가 되어버립니다.
버클리 대학 수학 교수인 앨런 쇤펠트는 수학 문제를 풀 때 필요한 것은 수학적 재능보다는 문제에 접근하는 태도라고 단정했습니다. 고등학교 학생들에게 풀기 어려운 문제를 제시했을 때 문제를 풀다가 포기하는 데까지 걸리는 시간은 30초에서 5분 정도, 평균으로 따져도 2분에 불과했답니다. 그러나 어떤 사람들은 시간이 얼마나 걸리던 아랑곳하지 않고 스스로 납득할 만한 결과가 나올 때까지 집요하게 파고든다는 것입니다. 쇤펠트는 “성공은 보통사람들이 30초 만에 포기하는 것을 22분간 붙잡고 늘어질 수 있는 끈기와 지구력 그리고 의지의 산물”이라고 태도를 강조했습니다.
<아웃라이어>의 저자 말콤 글래드웰도 “성공은 능력이 아니라 성공에 필요한 태도를 갖추고 있느냐 없느냐에 달린 문제”라고 잘라 말합니다. 존 맥스웰도 “삶의 문제들은 자신의 태도에 따라서 최악의 것이 될 수도 있고, 최상의 것이 될 수도 있다”라고 말합니다. 물론 태도가 만능은 아닙니다. 존 맥스웰은 태도가 할 수 있는 것과 없는 것을 말합니다. 태도가 능력과 경험, 성장을 대치할 수 없고 태도는 저절로 좋게 머물러 있지 않는다고 말합니다. 그러나 태도는 생활방식과 대인관계, 문제해결을 시켜 준다고 말합니다. 키스 해럴은 <태도의 경쟁력>에서 "태도란 우리가 하는 모든 일의 바탕이자 도구로, 운명을 통제하고 직장생활이나 개인 생활을 최고로 만들기 위한 핵심 요소"라면서" '능력'은 바꿀 순 없지만 '태도'는 바꿀 수 있다는 사실에 주목해야 한다"고 강조하고 있습니다. 태도를 조금만 바꾸어도 생각은 놀랄 만큼 달라지며, 생각이 달라지면 믿음이 바뀌게 되고, 믿음이 달라지면 행동이, 더 나아가 인생이 바뀌게 된다고 말하고 있습니다. 그는 주장합니다. 행복하고 성공적인 삶을 살려면 좋은 태도를 선택하고 '나쁜 태도'를 '좋은 태도'로 전환하라고 말합니다. 성공적으로 인생을 살고 싶으면 부정적이기보다는 긍정적인 태도, 소극적이기보다는 적극적인 태도, 비관적이기보다는 낙관적인 태도를 갖도록 해야 합니다.
